Sports Turf Specifier Centre

Better briefs create better field specifications.

Resources for consultants, schools, councils, clubs, developers and procurement teams planning artificial sports turf projects. Use this centre to structure the brief, separate evidence stages and identify the project information required before a technical system is locked.

Project information

What Apollo needs before a serious turf review.

This information helps identify the most suitable LUTHVAR pathway and the technical documentation required for the project.

01Project country / location and target programme
02Primary sport, playing level and secondary sports
03Field or court dimensions and available footprint
04New build, hard-base conversion, resurfacing or synthetic-field replacement
05Survey, levels, base construction and drainage information
06Expected weekly / annual utilisation
07Climate and exposure conditions
08Preferred infill direction where relevant
09Existing shock pad / elastic layer information where relevant
10Consultant, tender, governing-body or installed-field testing requirement

Technical review

Move from project fit to specification-ready information.

Technical information is matched to the exact system so the project team can work from current, relevant documentation.

01

Project Fit

The sport, site, use level, climate and construction requirements are matched to the most suitable turf pathway.

02

Technical Review

Construction, performance data and system components are checked against the current technical documentation.

03

Evidence Review

Where certification or formal performance evidence applies, the documentation is matched to the exact system and intended use.

04

Specification Ready

The applicable datasheet, specification wording and project-use information are ready for the project team.

Tender & specification guidance

Write the performance brief before the product schedule.

The aim is to make the tender specific enough to protect the playing outcome without importing unsupported product claims.

Specify the outcome before a model

State sport, level, utilisation, climate, base, drainage, maintenance and evidence requirements before locking a product.

Tie evidence to the exact construction

A test or certificate should identify the actual turf and system components it covers. Do not transfer evidence between different constructions.

Separate product evidence from finished-field evidence

Where a standard or governing body assesses installed facilities, the product document and the completed-field test are different evidence stages.

Name project responsibilities

Identify who owns civil works, drainage, turf installation, line marking, equipment interfaces and finished-field testing.

Use current revisions

Tender and submittal review should use current datasheets, certificates, warranties and installation / maintenance documents.

Base & drainage

Do not specify the surface in isolation.

Levels, base construction, drainage, edge restraint, shock layer, line marking and installation tolerances can all affect the finished playing surface. Replacement turf should not conceal unresolved settlement, cracking or drainage problems.

Operations

Maintenance belongs in the specification.

Surface selection should reflect the maintenance equipment, staffing and operating budget that will actually be available after handover.

Technical resources

Use the current documents, not assumptions.

Technical datasheets are provided where current system-specific information is available.

Decision Centre

Compare project pathways before writing the brief.

Project handover

Turn the specification questions into a structured project brief.

Upload the site, civil, drainage, tender and existing-field information that applies. The exact system can then be reviewed against current technical evidence.
