TRAVEL / NEW ZEALAND

Wild Land · Travel with the product

Three routes built around the gear.

These guides sit after the full Wild Land catalogue for a reason: the product comes first. Each route shows how selected Wild Land equipment can be combined into a practical New Zealand road-trip setup.

Choose the gear first. Use the trip guides to see where and why it earns its place.
01

Taumarunui → Stratford · Taranaki / Manawatū-Whanganui · 1–2 days

Forgotten World Highway

A classic New Zealand back-country drive through remote hill country, heritage settlements, saddles, native bush and the famous single-lane Moki Tunnel.

DifficultyModerate
Road styleWinding heritage highway · mainly sealed with remote and unsealed sections
Best seasonSpring to Autumn
Family suitabilityGood for adventurous families
Travel order

Taumarunui → Tāngarākau Gorge → Mount Damper Falls detour → Moki Tunnel → Tahora Saddle → Whangamōmona → Stratford.

Why this setup suits the route

Remote sections reward a self-contained camp setup.
Frequent scenic stops make quick shelter genuinely useful.
Limited services make organised food, light and storage more important.
01

7 adventure stops

What to stop for

1
Taumarunui

Eastern gateway to SH43. Fuel, food and final supplies are best sorted before entering the remote highway.

2
Tāngarākau Gorge

A deep, forested passage through one of the route's most memorable back-country landscapes.

3
Mount Damper Falls

A worthwhile signed detour and short walk to one of the North Island's highest waterfalls.

4
Moki Tunnel

The hand-cut single-lane road tunnel is one of the defining engineering landmarks of the highway.

5
Tahora Saddle

High-country views and a strong place to pause before the road drops deeper into eastern Taranaki.

6
Whangamōmona

Historic settlement and natural midpoint for a longer stop, meal or overnight plan nearby.

7
Stratford

Western gateway beneath Taranaki Maunga and the natural finish for the heritage highway.

Before you go

Official Taranaki visitor information describes the Forgotten World Highway as roughly 150 km between Stratford and Taumarunui, with limited services and mobile coverage. Fill up before entering the route, allow extra time for stops and check current road conditions before departure.

Route structure checked against current Taranaki visitor information.
02

Blenheim → Hanmer Springs · Marlborough / Canterbury · 1–2 days

Molesworth High Country Passage

A remote high-country crossing through the Awatere Valley and Rangitahi / Molesworth, with vast landscapes, historic cob buildings, Wards Pass and very little roadside infrastructure.

DifficultyModerate–Challenging
Road styleLong unsealed high-country road · narrow bridges · corrugations and exposure
Best seasonOpen season only · typically Spring to Autumn
Family suitabilityBest for confident adventure families
Travel order

Blenheim → Seddon / Awatere turn-off → Awatere Valley → Molesworth Cob Cottage → Wards Pass → Acheron country → Hanmer Springs.

Why this setup suits the route

No fuel or food through the reserve makes organised gear especially valuable.
Exposed high-country weather makes fast shelter worthwhile.
Long unsealed sections favour a simple, secure and self-contained setup.
01

7 adventure stops

What to stop for

1
Blenheim

Start fully fuelled and provisioned before leaving Marlborough's main service centre.

2
Seddon / Awatere turn-off

The decision point from SH1 into the Awatere Valley and the beginning of the long inland approach.

3
Awatere Valley

A remote valley drive through working high-country landscapes before reaching the reserve.

4
Molesworth Cob Cottage

Historic gateway building and the northern start of the Acheron Road through the reserve.

5
Wards Pass

At 1145 m, the road's highest point and a major high-country landmark exposed to rapid weather changes.

6
Acheron country

Braided rivers, historic shelters and the long central section where self-sufficiency matters most.

7
Hanmer Springs

Southern finish with fuel, food and accommodation back within easy reach.

Before you go

DOC currently lists Acheron Road as open 7 am–7 pm from 1 October until Easter Monday or the second Monday in April, whichever is later, and notes it can close without warning. The 207 km road is unsealed and challenging; caravans, buses and vehicles over 7 m are not permitted, trailers require a permit, and there is no mobile coverage, fuel or food through the reserve. Check DOC and Marlborough road updates immediately before travel.

Access details checked against current Department of Conservation Acheron Road guidance.
03

Balclutha → Invercargill · Otago / Southland · 2 days

The Catlins Wild Coast

A relaxed southern coastal journey linking lighthouse country, waterfalls, forest, wildlife coast and exposed beaches with short walks and repeated scenic stops.

DifficultyEasy–Moderate
Road styleScenic sealed touring roads with local detours and some gravel access
Best seasonYear-round · best Spring to Autumn
Family suitabilityVery good for families
Travel order

Balclutha → Nugget Point → Purakaunui Falls → McLean Falls → Curio Bay → Waipapa Point → Invercargill.

Why this setup suits the route

Frequent short scenic stops reward a fast day-use setup.
Coastal weather makes shelter and comfortable camp living worthwhile.
The route suits families who want nature, short walks and manageable daily driving.
01

7 adventure stops

What to stop for

1
Balclutha

Northern gateway and a sensible place to fuel, provision and set the trip up before heading into the coast.

2
Nugget Point

Iconic lighthouse walk and dramatic offshore stacks on the northern edge of the Catlins.

3
Purakaunui Falls

A short forest walk to one of New Zealand's best-known tiered waterfalls.

4
McLean Falls

Longer forest stop with waterfalls and lush Catlins bush.

5
Curio Bay

Southern coastal stop known for geology, wildlife and wide ocean views.

6
Waipapa Point

Historic lighthouse country and a strong final coastal stop before turning toward Invercargill.

7
Invercargill

Trip finish with full services, accommodation and easy onward travel into Southland.

Before you go

Allow more time than the road distance suggests. The value of the Catlins is in the detours, walks and coastal stops, not in driving straight through. Wildlife areas are sensitive: stay on marked access, keep appropriate distance from animals and check current local and DOC conditions before travel.

Adventure is the example. Wild Land is the product.Trip information is planning inspiration, not turn-by-turn navigation. Camp only where permitted and always check current road, weather, DOC and local access conditions before departure.
